What are HS codes and why does ZIMRA need them?

An HS code (Harmonized System code) is an international product-classification number. It tells ZIMRA what category a product belongs to. FDMS requires a valid HS code on every line item of a fiscal document.

Code length

• A 4-digit code is a heading (a broad product group).
• An 8-digit code is a national tariff line (the specific product). Zimbabwe's tariff uses 8-digit codes.
• Use a 4- or 8-digit code — the HS Code Finder only shows these valid lengths.

Why it's mandatory

Without a valid HS code, ZIMRA rejects the line and the document won't fiscalise. Assigning codes once, to your catalogue, means you never hit this at the till.

Finding a code

Use the HS Code Finder on the website (or in the portal): type the product — for example "sugar", "motor oil", "laptop" — and pick the closest match.
